Over 350,000 tourists visit El Calafate each year to see the impressive Perito Moreno glacier on the outskirts of town. Located in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, Perito Moreno glacier is one of the glaciers in the area belonging to the 3rd largest ice field on the planet, behind the Antarctica and Greenland.
Now, the tourists can enrich their trip experience to the glacier by visiting this brand new, modern and interactive Ice Museum. The museum was created to promote education and awareness of the region, glaciacion processes and effects of global warming in action, visible here in Los Glaciares NP. Glaciarium, as it is also called, is a first of its kind museum/interpretive center in Patagonia. It opened its doors in January, and was officiated by Argentine president Christina de Kirchner Fernandez on February 16th. The architecture of the Museum reflects the surrounding landscape, its shape resembling the glacier itself.
Museum houses exhibit galleries, auditorium, cafe, gift shop, and interactive displays. It is a must for anyone visiting El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier. Located few kilometers outside the town. Cost of admission $17.50 for adults and $12.50 children under 12. Open daily 9am – 9pm, except Mondays.
