Ana reporting from the deepest canyon in South America:
Yesterday I traveled from the city of Arequipa to the town of Chivay, in the heart of Colca valley. We had a nice group of people. One couple from Madrid, another one from Lima and a Russian guy that didn’t even speak much English!
We started early in the morning and we stopped in different viewpoints and interesting sites! Like the highest point of the road at 4910 meters above sea level!! (approx 15000 feet!) you really feel the altitude there with a light headache that went away when we went down to Chivay at 3600! Chivay is a small town with only 8000 inhabitants.
The scenery was amazing! Green valleys with yellow flowers everywhere!!
Once we arrived in Chivay we had lunch and we hit the hot springs! What a nice time relaxing there in the middle of the mountains!
My hotel (Eco Inn Colca) was a little bit farther, in the village of Yanque which is smaller than Chivay but with great views of the canyon from each room and the sound of the river running down! After an early dinner at the hotel I went to sleep to get ready for an early start the next morning.
Today we saw the condors from the Mirador de la Cruz located one hour from Yanque. What a nice show they did for us!!! I couldn’t believe how close we saw them!! We were able to see two, but they stayed long enough for us to take plenty of photos and even get a close-up when they rested!
Our guide said that sometimes you see more, and sometimes nothing, but in any case we were happy with our experience there! I took so many photos that I hope some are good to share! Normally my husband Darek is the photographer but I am doing my best considering he is not here! Thank God for the automatic settings and digital cameras!!!
I am now back in Arequipa city having a cafe at Cafe y VINO, small coffee-house inside the historical place called Compania de Jesus. I am enjoying the view of the white cupulas from the church while waiting for the time to take my bus to Nazca for another adventure tomorrow!
